Book Launch Held for "Bougainville, The Island Given by God" ⋯ “I Want to Share Bougainville’s Potential with the World”

"Bougainville, The Island Given by God"

"Bougainville, The Island Given by God" is Korea’s first comprehensive introduction to Bougainville, written by the author who, having been recognized as a member of a local tribe, became the head of a public enterprise under the autonomous government. Drawing on more than a dozen visits to Bougainville, the book offers a rare and firsthand perspective on this remarkable land.

Bougainville is a self-governing region in the southwestern Pacific, blessed with breathtaking natural beauty and vast resources. It is home to the Panguna mine, once the world's largest copper deposit, and rich in gold, silver, nickel, rare earth elements, and other underground treasures. Its waters yield 40% of the world’s tuna, and its untouched rainforests—never subjected to large-scale logging—preserve an ecosystem of pristine wonder. With such features, Bougainville is truly worthy of being called “the last paradise on Earth.”

Following its struggle for independence, Bougainville is now preparing for large-scale national reconstruction to restore its war-damaged infrastructure. Recognizing its immense potential, global powers—including the United States, China, Japan, and Australia—are already engaged in a fierce competition to secure a foothold in this land of opportunity.
